Threats

The Threats page shows the dangerous sites AdBolish blocked: malware, phishing, scams and command-and-control servers, crypto-miners, and (if you turned them on) newly registered domains.

Turning threat protection on and off

The Threat protection card at the top of the page has a switch for each list:

  • Threats: Malware, phishing, scams and command-and-control servers. On by default.
  • Crypto-mining: In-browser cryptocurrency miners and crypto scams. On by default.
  • Newly registered domains: Domains registered in the last week, a favourite of phishing and scams. Occasionally blocks a brand-new legitimate site. Off by default. It isn't included in the installer, so it says Downloads when turned on and arrives a moment after you switch it on.

Notifications

Notify me when a dangerous site is blocked is on by default. When AdBolish blocks malware, phishing, a scam or a crypto-miner, Windows shows Dangerous site blocked with the domain and, when Windows says, the app that tried to reach it. Click the notification to open this page.

So that a program retrying in the background can't flood you, each domain notifies at most once an hour, and notifications come at most once a minute: anything blocked in between is added to the next one (… and 3 more). Newly registered domains are blocked without a notification. The same switch is in Settings ▸ Protection.

Notifications show only while the AdBolish app is running. Blocking doesn't depend on them.

The tables

  • Just now lists the latest threats blocked since you opened the window, with the App that asked and an Allow menu.
  • Dangerous sites stopped lists each site with its Category, Blocks, Domains and Share of blocks. Click one to see its domains below.

What usually goes wrong

  • A program on your PC keeps reaching a threat. Note the app named in the notification or the App column. A program you don't recognise repeatedly contacting malware sites may be unwanted software; scan your PC with Windows Security.
  • A site you trust is listed. Lists occasionally catch a legitimate site. Use Allow on it, or Fixing a broken site.

Threat protection — see what it does

Malware, phishing, scam and crypto-mining sites are blocked for every app, and a notification names the site and the app that tried to reach it. Learn more about the Threat protection.
